While I was reading some recent reports on the drugs and the people who were involved in the death of Mathew Perry, I started thinking about Friends. Friends, the TV Show. Friends was popular because it showed a group of people who played the parts of true friends. Those Friends would play together and do anything to help each other. It isn’t usually the way it is in real life, maybe that is why people were so obsessed with the show.
Those types of friends in the TV Show are the kind of friends everyone would like to have in their own lives, but it just isn’t the case at least not in mine. We have all had people we called our friends because we hung out, talked, played, and had fun with each other, but we were not what I would call true friends. True friends would go the extra mile to help a friend in need. I have had a few dozen people I liked and called my friends, but there were limitations on how far they would go to help me out of a jam. It went both ways, I can remember cases where what I would have done if I were a true friend, I didn’t do because I was scared or I didn’t care.
And now we come to that Sunday part of my thoughts. Jesus had friends when he was on the earth. He had friends, but they weren’t like the true friends I was thinking about. One turned him into the authorities and another didn’t acknowledge that he ever knew him because of his fear and the shame it would cause him. Maybe his friends were just like the ones you and I have. Maybe friends are just people we like and get along with, but when it comes to life or giving up the ghost, we back away from taking part in their lives. Maybe the Friends on TV are wishful fantasies. But then again maybe I am wrong. Maybe I have friends just like those on TV. Maybe, but I will have to wait and read the script and see what the writers think.
Until next time.
